In winter, all you want to do is curl up next to a fire, covered in a plush throw, sipping a mug of hot chocolate or mulled wine. Summer, however, is completely different. Those things are too heavy and warm for the bright days of an English summer; there are many things you can do in your home to make the entire décor perfect for the long, lazy season.

Let it flow

The last thing you want in the summer is a home that is as cosy as it was over the winter. One of the easiest ways to make your home breezier is to move your furniture back so that people and breezes can flow easily. Take the room’s focus away from the fireplace and move it towards the windows.

Brighten up

Switch out darker, more sombre colours for brighter, lighter hues. Painting several times a year is unrealistic, so instead of changing wall colours, try changing accents like cushions, curtains and rugs from dark, cosy colours to light ones. Even your leather furniture can be lighter: Natuzzi furniture, for example, comes in a wide range of lighter shades that can feel airy in the warmer months and cosy in colder times.

Close the fireplace

Fireplaces are great focal points in a room, but they are useless during warmer months. Why not change its function; clean it out and put in white candles. That way you can still enjoy a glow without the heat. Put some sand or rocks in the candle holders to stabilise the candles and to bring to mind bonfires on the beach.

Change up the details

Try putting out some new accessories. Shells, cushions made from lighter fabrics like cotton or linen, and trinkets that reference the outdoors ensure that the great weather surrounds you, even when you’re stuck inside. You can even get a chaise longue, like one from Natuzzi, to bring the relaxation of lounging outside inside.

Open up the windows

When it gets incredibly hot and humid, you will want to literally open up all of the windows, but what can you do about the bugs? Put up curtains that are lightly coloured and made from gauzy fabrics to make the room feel incredibly bright and fresh during the lovely weather – cool air in, bugs out.

With all these easy ways to change the feeling of your rooms, your home should be ready for summer in a weekend. Then you can fully enjoy the light, warmth and respite that summer brings.

When that insurance renewal notice lands on the mat, it’s never good news. Whatever the type of insurance and whoever the provider, the next year’s premium is always higher than what you’re currently paying.

It’s really no wonder that comparison sites like MoneySupermarket are doing a blistering trade. Just about everything is experiencing inflation, except our salaries, which aren’t keeping pace. It’s become a matter of course that many of us are seriously looking for ways to cut down on our household bills. The comparison sites are there to facilitate us realising savings in loans, credit cards, energy bills and insurance.

The UK insurance market is incredibly competitive and there’s no barrier to anyone looking to save money on their renewal quote. Moneysupermarket.com is just one of the sites leading the consumer challenge for a better deal.

These comparison sites are easy to use. They all work on pretty much the same premise. You choose the kind of insurance you need, type in details and press the button. Hey presto! In a matter of seconds a whole array of quotes, usually ranked in price order, appear on the screen for you to review.

To make the best of a comparison site, you do have to invest a little time in entering your details and customising your quote to the level of cover you require and the additional options you might want to select.

This is no hardship if you think back to the time before the Internet when you had to sit down with the yellow pages, a pad and pen and spend time ringing various insurance companies to get a clutch of quotes.

Once you have reviewed the quotes, choose the one that appeals most, click the relevant tab and you’re taken directly to the insurance provider’s site, at this point the comparison site has done its job. Until the next time you need to make a saving.

Oh this solution is a doozie, one that I never thought I would come across. Not only does it work like magic, it has taught me a new term for an age old home furnishing issue that is adorable. The problem at hand is those deep marks left in rugs and carpets by furniture that has rested upon it for any length of time. Those indentations are eye sores, and can cause you to keep your layout in the same way longer than you care to in order to conceal them from view.

So, first off here is the most precious name for those fabric dings, carpet dings. Such a cute title for what used to be such an issue. But, now that I know how to fix, it, the big deal has evaporated. Funny how what was once such a thorn in one’s side can be banished by someone else’s crafty resolution. Definitely happy that the smarty who came up with this solution was willing to share, and as such see it as my civic duty to pass it on to you.

All it takes is placing an ice cube over the afflicted area on the carpet. As the carpet fibers absorb the water they plump back up to their original mass. Watch to see when the cubes have melted and then pick up the excess water with a towel. Follow this up with a vacuuming, and the difference will amaze you. Bye Bye carpet ghosts, we know how to fight you off now.

Some families have itineraries that are difficult to keep track of, others have issues with keeping track of belongings, and so on and so forth. If you and your crew face such hurdles, it may be prudent to create a living workspace for the family. This is different from a home office area, as it is meant to be out in the open, visible intentionally. It is also created to assist every member that lives within the household, a place for everyone to seek clarity, and organisation for big and small information and perspective.

A long skinny table or desk will be of great benefit in making this a highly functioning resource. Have each person choose a colour that will mark their materials, and zone. Above the work table hang a square bulletin for each of you in the colour selected to hang important news, cards, notes, and anything else that would otherwise get lost underneath a pile of papers ig you did not have this feature. Under the table place a tray in the same shape as the table to put the shoes most recently used and not worthy to enter deeper into the home. On the desk itself line up folder boxes in the colours again, and allow each person to put workbooks, sheet music, magazines, homework, or whatever needs to be taken out of the dwelling in the near future, and is important not to forget. This will become the central spot in the home where members know to go when in search of something, and where to leave those pertinent supplies. Remember the table or desk need not be expensive, just able to meet the needs of your entourage.

When buying a new carpet, you may think spending hours looking at carpet samples and finally choosing your favoured style, that the hard work is over. But it’s only just beginning. All your hard work will be for nothing if it isn’t fitted properly.

While ensuring you hire a professional fitter is imperative, there are a few things you can do to make sure you get the best fitted carpet.

Understand underlay: Nothing could be worse for a new carpet than being placed on an old underlay. As this acts as the cushion on which the carpet sits it helps overall resilience and makes it resistant to flattening.

It’s important to make sure you’re not tempted to save money by laying a brand new carpet on old underlay. Not only will this work against the look of your new carpet, it can also invalidate any guarantees that the manufacturer may provide.

Getting started: Before your new carpet arrives, completely empty the room and make sure you vacuum or sweep the floor to get rid of any dust or debris. Carpet which has been laid on a dirty floor is susceptible to ‘draught marks’ which appear at the edges of the room. In actual fact these marks are created by the dust finding a route up via the edges of the carpet.

Also check if the carpet fitter will remove doors prior to installation and if they offer removal of your existing carpet (it should be vacuumed prior to removal to reduce dust and dirt). In most cases a fee will be applied to dispose of old waste carpet.

When the carpet is delivered check it’s what you ordered. Look at the texture, colour and style and make sure there are no visible defects.

During and after installation: New thicker carpets may prevent doors from swinging clear and free so you may need to arrange to have them trimmed. Once the carpets are laid, ventilate the area and vacuum carpets to remove loose fibres. It is common for a new carpet to

- Shed; after regular vacuuming this will subside

- Sprout; single tuft extending above carpet surface – simply snip it off

- Shade; colour change that seems to occur in various parts of the carpet, caused by light being reflected in different ways, as pile fibres bend in different directions – this is not a defect

Your fire alarm protects you and your belongings, you know those valuable televisions, kitchen appliances, and personal articles. Now, I do not mean to go scaring you, but to ensure that the alarm is in working order you need to take steps to make it so.

Oddly, most people wait until the thing starts to do that unbelievably annoying beeping to let you know the battery is dying. For me, the opportunity to avoid that is enough to get me to do what I am meant to do, and that is switch the batteries out every six months.

Now, you can put those batteries in other things that do not hold such weighty roles, like the shower radio, or maybe the buzzer in one of your family board games. If you think you will never be able to remember to do this, well just make it a habit when you turn back the clocks for daylight savings time. That will be very specific, and there is no room for mistake that way. In addition, it is a fine time for you to check on all your other batteries, to confirm they are not a fire hazard of their own. Check and double check on that to do list, feels good doesn’t it?

While attending an early holiday party I noticed something both practical and clever that I would like to replicate. The punch bowl not only looked inviting with its festive raspberry coloured contents, and chopped fruit, but their was another addition I was not expecting. The host had taken the mold for mini bundt cakes and turner it into an ice mold.

Making the ice larger than the regular cube size made it easier to avoid them, and to only scoop out the intended item, the festive punch. When I asked the host about it, he said he had gotten the idea from a wedding he had attended where the caterer had placed a regular sized bundt mold in the champagne punch bowl. Since, he had been doing variations each time he had a chance. He said that not only was he happy to have come across the idea because it was adorable, but because it gave him a reason to pull out the punch bowl more often. I expect I will do the same next year.

Let me paint the picture, you still have curlers in your hair and the table has not yet been set, but your guests are at the door. Off you run to remove the rollers, and direct your spouse to answer the door. But you can’t leave him to entertain them for long, especially not empty handed. Sure, a cocktail will fill a couple of minutes, but they will want grub, sustenance, nourishment, fooooood.

Well, lets be frank, this comes as no surprise, things rarely run according to plan. Therefore, you want a backup, a premade appetiser is in order. Just accept in advance that these things happen, and whip something up to have your spouse offer your invitees upon their arrival.

What you might ask? I like to have a dip ready to go, and this is tasty yet easy. Make a caramelised onion dip with onions, salt and pepper, sour cream, butter, and cream cheese. Serve with vegetable chips, endive leaves or crudité. This will give you a buffer to sneak in and set the table, and assemble yourself in full, sans the rollers.

One of the most common type of wrenches are torque wrenches. These tools are used specifically to apply a torque, or tightening, to a fastener, such as a nut or a bolt. Not only are these wrenches used for tightening, they also serve as measuring tools by allowing the handler of the tool to measure and set the torque of nuts and bolts, and other types of fasteners. The tool was invented in 1918 by Conrad Bahr, and was designed to prevent over tightening bolts on water main and steam pipe repairs underground. Paul Allen Sturtevant later perfected the tool and became the first individual to sell them. The torque wrench is a very simple tool to use.

There a several different types of torque wrenches. Some are more modern and more complex than others, but one of the simplest types is the beam type. The beam type was invented in the late 1920s/early 1930s by Walter Percy Crysler. It has a lever arm between the head and the handle of the wrench, which is made of a material which bends elastically in response to applied torque. The wrench also has an indicator scale that can show precisely the amount of torque that is applied. When the indicator scale shows that the desired torque is reached, the operator knows to stop applying force. Though the beam type is one of the most simple and inexpensive type, it is very precise and reliable. Beam types are however impossible to use in situations where the scale cannot be directly read, such as in automotive applications.

The deflective beam type is a more advanced version of the beam type. This wrench was invented about twenty years after the original beam type. This tool also provides more consistent and accurate readings throughout the range of each wrench. The deflective beam type allows the user to see and hear when the desired torque level is reached. A more improved version of the deflective beam type is the click type. This type of wrench uses a calibrated clutch mechanism to reach the desired level of applied torque. When the desired torque is reached, the clutch slips, preventing additional tightening. Various types of click type wrenches exist for different applications and different torque ranges. Click type wrenches are precise when they are properly calibrated; however the more complex mechanism can result in loss of calibration sooner than the beam type.

The most modern and sophisticated types of wrenches are electronic. These tools operate by modern electronics. Some of these wrenches are programmable, and they measure the tightening angle from the snug point as well as the applied torque. The mechatronic torque wrench is a combination of the click type and the electronic. This wrench provides both digital and mechanical readings on the torque, and is equipped with wireless technology to transmit the readings. All of the measurements are transferred and documented via wireless data transmission.

I really like it when I go to a website to search for one thing, and by chance find something unexpected, and pleasing. Like earlier today when I went to sites that I believed to be for furniture stores, and found they offered a whole lot more than furniture. Maybe it is the fact that I have always been fond of that general store set up, you remember the one on Little House on the Prairie, Oleson’s Mercantile. Such a sensible approach to purchasing all the things you need, as long as there are no gossiping, meddling characters involved like Harriet and Nellie Oleson.

Anyway, enough talk of Little House, as this is supposed to be about the wallpaper I luckily located by chance. But I must admit I did just go on a bit of a trivia tangent after locating the correct spelling of Oleson. Back to it, and then I can look into locating more trivia on that legendary series, as I can’t quite remember if Mary ever got her sight back. Funny how you can be all set to cover something that is actually of significance, and get off track so easily on to something so unrelated. Ok focus.

As I started off saying, I came across wallpaper when I wasn’t even thinking about changing my walls. What has pleased me most is that I found a collection by fashion designer Barbara Hulanicki. I have been a fan of her work since when she designed for the brand Fiorucci back in the 1980’s. Her style was my style throughout my tweens and teens. I still have every piece in a closet somewhere.

More recently, I knew she had started her own interior design business, and was receiving accolades for her work in that field. However, I was unaware of the fact that she was designing wallpaper, much less that it was available to the likes of me, and my unassuming budget. But once I happened upon it at the website I was perusing sofas on, I was in love.

I guess you can see a theme going here, I go off on tangents frequently. I still have not found the couch I initially went to the furniture stores to locate, but instead have multiple roles of wallpaper en route to my home. Maybe, after I have finished with that Little House trip down memory lane, I should refresh my recollection on how to remove old wallpaper, and put up new .
